October 8, 2020

At 17:23 hours, your Plymouth Fire Company No. 1 (Montco 43) volunteers were dispatched with an engine to the 500 block of Flint Hill Road at Shorty's U-Pull It junkyard in Upper Merion Township to assist station 56 Upper Merion Township Fire & EMS on a large trash/rubbish fire.

Station 56 units arrived to find a large pile of metal, vehicles, tires and other debris well involved deep in the back of the junkyard lot. 56 command quickly began requesting additional units to assist due to the deep seated and large volume of fire. Squirt 43 made the response with a crew of 5 and upon arrival were put to work relieving the first in engine crews inside the yard. The crew from the squirt assisted with fire suppression for over an hour until being relieved by other mutual aid companies.

This fire brought mutual aid in from multiple counties including Delaware and Chester County departments. Montgomery County Department of Public Safety's hazardous materials team also responded along with the County foam task force and the DEP. The hazmat team along with the DEP remained on location monitoring air quality, water run off and other potential hazards resulting from the fire suppression operation.

The fire was placed under control a bit after 20:00 hours. Upper Merion and Montco hazmat units were remaining on scene into the evening continuing to monitor conditions. Squirt 43 was clear and available just before 21:00 hours with no reported injuries to first responders or civilians.

A tremendous job done with incredible teamwork displayed by all of the responding agencies. Many thanks as well to the North Penn Goodwill Service Canteen 41 for providing food and drink for all personnel on scene!
